COURSE OVERVIEW
Find and mark an underground natural gas pipe. But stay alert — potentially dangerous AOCs come in all forms
This module requires trainees to demonstrate proper facility locating and marking activities. First, the trainee is presented with a locate ticket with the scope of work, then they have to compare this to the underground facility map, and they perform the locate using either the conductive or indicative method. Some facilities may be incorrectly mapped and/or be installed at an angle through a yard or across a street. During this entire process, trainees are exposed to unsafe situations, access restrictions, and different Abnormal Operating Conditions (AOCs).

COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course acts as an intensive field simulation and a rigorous safety compliance assessment for utility location crews.
Participants will learn how to
- Interpret Complex Documentation: Analyze a digital locate ticket, cross-reference the scope of work with local underground facility blueprints, and spot discrepancies.
- Master Locating Technologies: Successfully deploy both the Conductive Method (direct connection to a tracer wire) and the Inductive Method (using radio frequencies through the ground) based on soil and line constraints.
- Identify Abnormal Operating Conditions (AOCs): Recognize active field threats, such as broken tracer wires, unloadable plastic piping, or missing tracer boxes.
- Apply Standard APWA Markings: Correctly use industry-standard colors (High-Visibility Yellow for gas) to spray paint and flag precise line paths, including offsets and intersections.
WHO SHOULD JOIN?
This technical training is a mandatory asset for public utilities, damage prevention agencies, and civil engineering teams
- Field technicians specializing in utility damage prevention and 811 locate crews.
- Apprentice pipeline locators and newly hired field workers.
- Construction excavation supervisors and safety inspectors.
- Telecom, water, and electrical locators expanding their skillset to high-pressure gas.
- Utility safety managers looking to eliminate expensive third-party line strikes and compliance penalties.

COURSE METHODOLOGY
We utilize a realistic, challenge-driven workflow designed to break bad habits and reward precision
- The Ticket Desk: Trainees begin by evaluating an official 811 locate ticket. They must determine the exact boundary of the dig zone and identify any mapping inconsistencies before stepping onto the site.
- The Active Field Scan: Technicians navigate a virtual neighborhood or construction zone, using specialized equipment to trace lines across yards, under asphalt, and around physical barriers or property lines.
- The Blind Map Twist: To simulate true field conditions, the software intentionally randomizes errors where the digital map does not match the actual buried pipe. The trainee is evaluated entirely on what their equipment reads, not what the outdated blueprint claims.
- The Post-Mark Audit: After spraying their paint lines and setting flags, trainees submit the job. The simulator pulls back the virtual dirt to reveal exactly how close the technician's marks were to the actual physical pipe, providing an instant precision score.
COURSE DURATION
5days
COURSE CERTIFICATES
Participants who accurately trace the randomized pipelines, handle field AOCs correctly, and mark within strict legal tolerance zones will receive a formal Certificate of VR Facility Locating, Marking, and Damage Prevention.
