COURSE OVERVIEW
Complete a multi-step safety inspection in VR to ensure technicians can do so successfully in the field
This module requires trainees to perform a multi-step appliance safety inspection prior to re-lighting and turning on customer-owned appliances. The types of appliances include gas ranges, gas dryers, water heaters (on-demand, power vented, traditional), gas furnaces, and hot water boilers. Trainees are required to inspect the gas piping, shut-off valves, vent piping, combustion, boiler pressure, discharge pipe, safety valves, confined space for make-up air, etc. Upon final inspection, the trainee has to determine if the appliance is safe to relight or if they need to disconnect the appliance and leave the customer a Warning Correction Needed Tag.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
This hands-on simulation serves as both an intensive instructional sandbox and a strict compliance assessment for utility technicians.
Participants will learn how to
- Audit Gas Delivery Piping: Inspect gas lines, test the integrity of manual shut-off valves, and identify improper materials or leaks.
- Verify Venting & Combustion Safety: Evaluate exhaust vent piping for blockages or back drafting, check combustion air quality, and calculate confined space make-up air requirements.
- Inspect Boilers & Water Heaters: Validate boiler system pressure, examine discharge piping, and ensure temperature and pressure relief (T&P) safety valves are functional.
- Issue Compliance Tags: Confidently determine if an appliance is safe to safely relight, or if it must be disconnected from service with an official Warning Correction Needed Tag.
WHO SHOULD JOIN?
This technical training is purposefully built for utilities, HVAC, and energy service providers
- Residential and commercial gas technicians.
- HVAC service engineers and apprentice plumbers.
- Utility company onboarding classes and field trainers.
- Safety auditors and quality assurance inspectors.
- Service managers looking to reduce field liabilities, callbacks, and property damage claims.

COURSE METHODOLOGY
We replicate real-world field workflows to ensure seamless skills transfer
- The Diagnostic Checklist: Trainees approach a randomized residential appliance and must execute a systematic, top-to-bottom visual and physical inspection.
- The Hazard Hunt: Technicians interact with virtual tools to check pressures, trace vents, and measure room volumes to ensure adequate oxygen supply.
- The Final Judgment: The simulation forces the trainee to make a definitive call. If they miss a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked vent and relight the system, the simulation displays the hazardous outcome (e.g., carbon monoxide buildup or gas leaks). A correct diagnosis results in either a safe ignition or a proper lockout tag procedure.
COURSE DURATION
5days
COURSE CERTIFICATES
Trainees who successfully navigate the multi-step safety checklist, identify hidden system defects, and make the correct tagging decisions will be awarded a Certificate of VR Residential Appliance Inspection and Gas Safety.
